Anyone traveling to the United Kingdom will need a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) and must apply for a UK ETA in advance, unless they are exempt.
What is the UK ETA
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a new entry requirement for visitors from certain countries. It is an electronic permission to travel to the UK, similar to the ESTA for the USA or the ETA for Canada.
Who needs to apply
- Passengers with a British or Irish passport, diplomats, visa nationals and those already granted permission to enter or remain in the country, will not need a UK ETA to travel to the UK. All visa nationals will still require a visa.
All other passengers will need a UK ETA to travel to the UK:
- EU citizens require a UK ETA as of April 2nd 2025 and can apply now.
- Non-EU citizens (including visa free country citizens) have required a UK ETA as of January 8th 2025.
Useful information
- How long a UK ETA lasts: It is valid for two years and permits visits to the UK for up to 6 months. Valid for entry by air, land and sea.
- UK ETA fee: £10 fee (approx. 13 USD)
- How long it takes to receive UK ETA: Usually within 3 working days, sometimes longer.
- Traveling with children: Every family member needs their own UK ETA, regardless of age.
- New/multiple passports: If you get a new passport, you will need a new UK ETA. If you hold more than one passport, remember to travel with the passport linked to the UK ETA.
